Critical mass flux for flaming ignition of dead, dry wood as a function of external radiant heat flux

چکیده
Extreme weather often contributes to crown fires, where the fire spreads from one tree crown to the next as a series of piloted ignitions. An important aspect in predicting crown fires is understanding the ignition of fuel particles. The ignition criterion considered in this work is the critical mass flux criterion – that a sufficient amount of pyrolysis gases must be generated for a diffusion flame to be established above the surface. An apparatus was built to measure the critical mass flux for sustained flaming ignition of woody materials for varying environmental conditions (heat flux and external oxidizer flow velocity). This paper reports the results of measured critical mass fluxes for dead, dry poplar under a constant flow velocity of 1 m/s under a range of radiant heat flux levels from 20 kW/m to 50 kW/m. The critical mass flux is seen to agree qualitatively with those in the literature (around 1-2 g/ms) and to increase with increasing levels of heat flux. Future work will explore the changes in critical mass flux with flow velocity, fuel moisture content, species, and live fuels.

متن کاملA Review on Ignition of Cellulose Materials under External Heat Flux
Ignition is the initial stage of burning the materials. The consequent flame spread over the materials, heat release rate, fire spread across the rooms, and other issues for building fires all depend on that. Numerous studies on the ignition of cellulose materials, especially wood, were reported in the literature. There are smoldering or glowing ignition (self-heating ignition) and flaming igni...
متن کاملIgnition of Wood a Review of the State of the Art
This review encompasses the available practical and experimental data on the ignition of solid wood. Only solid, natural wood is considered, not sawdust, chips, or products that have been treated with fire retardants or other substances, nor is the ignition of living trees. Panel products such as plywood or particleboard have ignition properties very similar to solid wood, so the solid-wood res...

Experiments were conducted to characterize fire properties of wood exposed to the certain external heat flux and under variety of wood moisture content. Six kinds of Indonesian wood: keruing, sono, cemara, kamper, pinus, and mahoni were exposed to radiant heat from a conical heater, result in appearance of a stable flame on the wood surface caused by spontaneous ignition. A thermocouple K-type ...
